  28. A funny idea just came into my head this other day... I was asking myself
  29. why huge companies (such as those who created bioforge f.ex.) don't include
  30. GUS support and instead is supporting strange soundcards that I've never
  31. heard of. Well, I found it funny that they didn't support the GUS when !!A
  32. LOT!! of people have it. So this peculiar idea submerged in my head.. Might
  33. it be that somebody is telling them not to include the GUS? Might it be that
  34. they answer "Noooo, we can't do such a thing". And then the other people
  35. give them some money and everything is okay, except for the GUS owners...
  36. Might it be that Creative is paying to have the GUS excluded... No that
  37. can't be. There has do be something else... But that's the only reason I can
  38. think of.

  57. Good collection of sequencers, players, midi handling stuff.  For
  58. starters, WinJammer2.3, WinJammerPro, WinMusic, Beatmaster, Encore,
  59. Ezimp18, Muzika2, Mstud40, etc.  If you don't have it, get impvz130 --
  60. great algorithmic improvisation software.  Pretty good game files on
  61. another directory.  I had unusually fast downloading as well.

  74. Hi all. I just purchased a Mitsumi FX400 from US Computer. I got it for 
  75. $179. Gee I thought, what a great ideal. So the box came, and from the 
  76. looks of the wrapping, I could've done a better job. So I say, so what, 
  77. maybe it just came out of the factory. I open up the package, guess what? 
  78. No 40pin connector cable, no EIDE/APTPI cdrom controller card, no 
  79. mounting screw, I have 2 hard drives and how the hell am I suppose to 
  80. mount this thing? Besides that the menu is horrible documented and 
  81. basically tell you nothing.

  83. Above maybe irrelevent but here's the question I'm going to ask. The 
  84. mitsumi audio calbe that came with looked quite small and doesn't fit, so 
  85. like I have a red, a white, and a black wire and an empty socket. So like 
  86. which pin goes to which pin on the GUS? Since the 4 pin connector of the 
  87. GUS is left grd grd right, and the 3 pin is lft grd rgt. and the mitsumi 
  88. audio cable is red black white none. Any help would be appreciated.

  90. One more thing, is it cheaper to obtain an EIDE cd controller card or the 
  91. GUS DB? Thanks!

  116. I bought three games recently, NASCAR, XCOM-2 and FIRST ENCOUNTERS(ELITE III)
  117. and they all support GUS but they don't work!
  118. NASCAR screws up the joystick readings.
  119. XCOM-2 have no sound effects.
  120. ELITE III: Screen becomes black just before the intro starts.
  121.  
  122. ATT: All games work perfectly with No Sound.

  124. I've tried every IRQ, DMA and hardware addr. I've tried SBOS, MegaEm 3.03b
  125. to no avail. I even changed the bus clock speed to 8.333MHz. Nothing.

  127. I bought my GUS in 1993. I have waited two years for games to support it.
  128. (I have updated the patches, etc. I have update 3.59)
  129. Now they do, but even those games won't work.
  130. All of the games are programmed in protected mode(DOS 4/GW and other extenders)
  131. which doesn't like TSR's especially well.

  133. Any solution but buying a SB? It is a big problem that even those games
  134. that apparently supports GUS don't work with GUS.
  135. Doesn't help GUS' popularity all that much.

  157. Nope...  takes one 40 pin 16bit 256k surface mount.  Costs an arm and a 
  158. leg, too:  $60 to $80 here in Canada (plus taxe(s) too!)!  I've got the 
  159. MAX, but I'm waiting for the chips to drop in price before I buy...  
  160. video boards are starting to use the 16 bit stuff, so hopefully it won't 
  161. be long.  I really don't think Gravis should'a switched.  Too much hassle.

  216.      I beleave the problem is that these files utilize all 16 midi 
  217.      channels.  In addition, they *may* have the drum track on ch16, 
  218.      instead of the MS-Windows "standard" of Ch10.

  220.      To fix this, make a new setup in the MIDI manager that enables ch1 
  221.      thru ch15, and maps ch16 to drums.

  232. When I start up Windows for Workgroups 3.11, my mouse pointer freezes.
  233. The mouse works the first second, but as soon as Program Manager shows up 
  234. (or when the GUS driver initializes, is my guess) it stops working - the 
  235. hour glass won't go away and I can't move it around anymore.
  236.  
  237. I have tried version 5.48 and 5.50 of the driver, but with the same 
  238. dissappointing result. The problem goes away if I modify SYSTEM.INI to 
  239. remove the GUS drivers, or if I exit Windows and start it up a second time.
  240.  
  241. I think the problem first showed up when I upgraded to 3.59, or when I 
  242. installed OS/2 Warp in my system.

  292.     TEAC supplies its own IDE card with the drive. I've had no 
  293. trouble using this card for the drive. I did change my bus speed to more 
  294. than 10MBps however and now get 620k/s transfer rate. I have an old GUS 
  295. which had no interface for the drive. I understand that using tthe CDROM 
  296. interface on many soundcards slows down the performance of this drive. So 
  297. use the IDE card that comes with it and hook ONLY the audio cable to your 
  298. GUS.

  314. Yes. First, I suggest that the drive itself be used with the card that 
  315. come it. I know, another slot taken up; but this ensures maximum drive 
  316. performance. The audio cable that comes with the drive has a SB plug 
  317. interface at the sound card end. I had to pay $6.95 to get a 4 hole 
  318. Panasonic plug so I could plug the audio to my GUS pins. Finally, you 
  319. must enable the GUS to "hear" the drive. Use "ultrinit -eo" (I think) in 
  320. the software.

  336. I'm kind of an old timer on this list (or at least I feel like it).  As such,
  337. I have long since forgotten wether the problems with UMC chipsets have 
  338. been resolved.  I remember that some UMC's had a bad DMA controller or
  339. some such, and GUSs refused to function on a 16-it DMA channel.

  341. Anyway, I'm looking at buying a UMC491 based VLB motherboard.  It has 4
  342. 30 pin and 2 72 pin SIMM sockets and an Award BIOS.  I am also getting a 
  343. rev 2.4 GUS for dirt cheap for use with Linux.  Can anyone give me an 
  344. opinion one way or the other on the UMC 491?  Will it handle 16-bit DMA?
